Employment gaps on a German CV — how to handle them

In short: A gap-free CV is not expected in Germany — “lückenlos” today means plausibly accounted for, not literally zero gaps. What matters is labeling each break honestly in neutral language: “Elternzeit” for parental leave, “aus gesundheitlichen Gründen” for illness, “arbeitssuchend” (never “arbeitslos”) for a job search. Never lie, and never use year-only dates to hide a gap.

Internationals often panic about gaps because Anglo advice treats them as red flags to disguise. In Germany the expectation is different — and calmer. Here’s how it actually works.

Is a gap-free CV expected?

No. Almost no career runs without interruptions, and German recruiters know it. “Lückenlos” has quietly come to mean accounted for, not unbroken. What draws suspicion isn’t a gap — it’s a gap that’s hidden or unexplained.

When a gap needs explaining

Rough guideline, not a hard rule:

  • Under ~2 months: usually no explanation needed.
  • Over ~2 months: worth a brief, neutral label.
  • ~3–4 months and up: expect it to be noticed and asked about — label it clearly.

How to label each type

Honesty in neutral wording — list the gap as a dated entry, don’t leave a hole:

Where you can, enrich a gap with anything real — a course, freelance work, volunteering — so it reads as active, not idle.

The two things you must never do

  1. Never lie or invent. Fabricated positions or dates are grounds for dismissal even after you’re hired — the risk is permanent, the gain temporary.
  2. Never use year-only dates to mask a gap. German CVs use month/year (03/2022 – 08/2022); switching to year-only to blur a break reads as concealment, not tidiness.

Address it once more in the interview

Label the gap on the CV, then prepare a one- or two-sentence explanation for the interview — calm, factual, forward-looking. A well-handled gap is a non-issue; a dodged one becomes one.
